SS GREAT BRITAIN
client: ss Great Britain Trust
location: Bristol
The ss Great Britain was designed by the famous and great engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. She was the first iron-hulled liner and was the largest ship in the world when she was conceived, leading the way in modern shipping technology. Built in the 1800s, and after a colourful life which ended up with the ship being used as a coal store in the Falkland Islands the ss GB has made her way back to Bristol where she was constructed. She was in a very poor condition and in serious need of restoration to preserve her for future generations to enjoy. Fenton Holloway were appointed to undertake an extensive condition survey and subsequent detailed analysis of the badly corroded iron hull in order to prepare repair proposals as part of a HLF funded major restoration programme. Fenton Holloway were also commissioned to provide engineering services for the restoration of dockside buildings which are to be converted into a museum Winner of the Institution of Structural Engineers Heritage Award for Infrastructure 2006 when the judges commented ......... "The skill and ingenuity of Fenton Holloway has helped to secure the future of S.S. Great Britain and provides the IStructE Structural Awards with a fine example of excellence in practice" [414]
